ME!

Long-time collaborator Ari Gibson and I worked with Producer Luke Jurevicius in Co-Directing this music video for the Australian band The Audreys.

It premiered in the Adelaide Film Festival in March 2011 coinciding with The Audrey's single launch.

All up the clip took about three and a half to four months, and was quite an endeavour at 4'40".

Luke Jurevicius and Shane Devries had previously developed a rough treatment for the clip, originally intended to be 3D animation. When Luke asked Ari and I to lead the production, we all agreed on a change to hand drawn animation. Not only did that make more sense considering our respective skills and experience, but we all thought that a traditional approach would benefit the tone of the song.

As Ari set about storyboarding the clip, Shane and I worked on the look and feel of the background design. Ari and I knew that we wanted something that felt fairly simple, not overly sophisticated. To us the song had a quiet melancholic quality to it, a bright and technically lavish production would have been at odds with that. We were also searching for a way to depict the environment that was in some way less defined, lending to the world a mysterious or dreamlike impression. Shane and I would take rough boards and attempt to development them into something that approached a final frame, Ari would also produce key moodboards.

While this was happening we were locking down character and other key design assets. My responsibilities then turned to designing assets, producing the background art, as well as sharing the compositing duties with one Ryan Kirby. The clip required quite a lot of environmental and effects animation which was pretty fun to do.

I'm going to try to add more info about the production later, including early concepts and some nice high res stills!
